Figure 01 was the first humanoid robot developed by Figure AI, a company founded in 2022 by Brett Adcock. Adcock had previously co-founded Archer Aviation. The company’s Chief Technology Officer, Jerry Pratt, joined from the Florida Institute for Human and Machine Cognition (IHMC), where he worked on robotics projects for two decades.
Standing at 1.68 meters (5’6″) and weighing 60 kilograms, Figure 01 closely matched human proportions. It featured over 40 degrees of freedom, custom electromechanical actuators, and a lightweight aluminum frame. The robot moved at a speed of 4.3 km/h and could carry loads up to 20 kilograms. A battery pack provided five hours of continuous operation. Its machine learning capabilities allowed it to function in complex, unstructured environments, making it highly adaptable.
Development and Purpose
Figure AI introduced Figure 01 in March 2023 as a commercially viable general-purpose humanoid robot. By October, the company demonstrated autonomous capabilities, including dynamic walking, coffee making, and handling bins in factory settings. The robot was primarily designed for logistics and warehousing, assisting with tasks like picking, placing, and transporting goods. Its AI-powered software enabled it to work alongside humans, automating repetitive labor to improve efficiency.
Advancements and Discontinuation
In February 2024, Figure AI secured $675 million in Series B funding, valuing the company at $2.6 billion. As development progressed, the company shifted focus to Figure 02, a more advanced humanoid with enhanced AI and mobility. Although Figure 01 is no longer in production, it played a crucial role in shaping the future of humanoid robotics for industrial applications.
